Pitchfork love for Eagulls single ‘Tough Luck’

“There is a quiet irony, however, to “Tough Luck” succeeding the way it does: that is, by being easily the most festival-friendly song the band has ever produced. From its huge Godzilla-pound drum beat to its bright, clanging guitar, hammering a major-key progression, the song moves like a piece of music meant to rile up a stadium: the verse melody feels sung by fifteen people rather than one, and the chorus chant—which sounds more like “TOP FLOOR! TOP FLOOR! TOP FLOOR!” than “Tough Luck”—turns on a second chord progression that lurches out of nowhere, a quizzical stairstep thing that twists the song’s harmonic motion sideways and braids the song into a knot. Lunk-headed antisocial tendencies and shrewd pop smarts usually line up nicely, and “Tough Luck” is a hocked loogie blown up on a Jumbotron.” –Pitchfork
